Governance

Introduction:

As is common with all Scout Groups, the 7th Braid (George Heriot’s School) Scout Group is a Charity registered with OSCR, number SC036159.  The group has been a registered charity since December 2004.  The Scout Group is a closed sponsored Group.  As such there is a formal agreement, known as a Sponsorship Agreement, between the Principal of the School, as the sponsoring authority’s representative, and the District Chair, as the representative of the Scout Group’s parental body.

Group Scout Council:

The Group Scout Council is the electoral body which has a governance role for the charity.  It approves Group Trustee Board appointments other than ex officio and co-opted appointments.  The Council membership comprises all parents of current youth members and supporters of the Group.  Supporters include the School Principal or their nominees.  The Group Scout Council may appoint some members on the recommendation of the Group Lead Volunteer and the Group Trustee Board and may appoint some community members.  The Group Scout Council meets yearly at its Annual General Meeting (AGM).  As this meeting it undertakes governance oversight and makes appointments to the Group’s Board of Trustees.

Board of Trustees:

The Group Trustee Board is a team of volunteers who work together, as charity Trustees, to make sure the Scout Group is run safely and legally.  At the heart of their role is a focus on strategy, performance and assurance, working to ensure that the Group is meeting The Scout Association’s overall aims and strategic goals.  Trustees are mainly parents of youth members or supporters of the Group.  The number of Trustees is determined by the Group Scout Council and is between 5 and 12. The trustees serve for a term in office of 3 years, which can be renewed twice for a total of 9 years’ service.
